			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the alarming statistics of one in three Americans suffering from obesity and another thirty- three percent being unhealthily overweight, generally speaking, we as a nation have become fat.</p>
<p>Clinically, obesity is defined in several ways: as a significantly higher than average proportion of body fat; as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) value greater than 30; or as weighing more than 20 percent over average weight according to statistical tables such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Height-Weight guidelines. &#8220;Morbid Obesity&#8221; is when a person weighs 50 to 100 percent or 100 pounds above ideal weight. If your ideal weight is 150 and you weight 200 lbs, this is referred to as morbid obesity.</p>
<p>&#8220;Central Obesity&#8221; better known simply as &#8220;Belly Fat&#8221; is defined as the fat around your abdomen and waist. Belly Fat comes in two forms:</p>
<p>1. Subcutaneous fat: the layer of fat tissue just below the skin.</p>
<p>2. Visceral fat: lives deeply within the abdomen and in and around major organs such as the heart, liver and stomach.</p>
<p>Health authorities now cite obesity as one of the most serious health problems facing our country. Being seriously overweight for any period of time poses a direct threat to your health. In addition, obesity is now known to significantly increase your risk of many other serious chronic and degenerative health challenges including:</p>
<p>• Cardiovascular Disease<br />
• Dementia<br />
• Depression<br />
• Diabetes<br />
• Fatty Liver<br />
• Gall Bladder Dysfunction<br />

<p>Consider these statistics: 85 percent of all cases of adult-onset (Type II) diabetes are directly related to obesity, as are 45 percent of all cases of high blood pressure, 35 percent of all cases of heart disease, and nearly 20 percent of all cases of dangerously elevated high cholesterol. Finally, obesity without any other health complications causes the premature deaths of 300,000 Americans each year.</p>
<p>Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)</p>
<p>To more accurately calculate whether you are excessively overweight, find your body mass index (BMI). BMI is the ratio of your height to your weight. A high BMI is an indicator of not only excess body fat but also of obesity-related health problems, especially chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. The higher the BMI, the higher the health risks.</p>
<p>Note: If you are pregnant, a bodybuilder, a competitive athlete, a child, or a frail elderly person, the BMI is not useful as the index is based on statistical averages, not body size exceptions.</p>
<p>Causes of Obesity and Unhealthy Weight Gain</p>
<p>The most common perception about obesity is that it is due to overeating and lack of exercise. While both of these factors are indeed important factors to consider, other equally important factors can also cause unhealthy weight gain. They include:</p>
<p>• Dieting: &#8220;yo-yo diets&#8221;</p>
<p>• Food allergies: Food allergies often go undiagnosed among patients who are overweight and obese, yet they can be a primary reason why people struggle with their weight. Food allergies contribute to weight gain and obesity in a number of ways:</p>
<p>o Causing food cravings that in some cases are addictive</p>
<p>o Causing water retention in the body, adding to a person&#8217;s overall weight</p>
<p>o Creating feelings of depression which can lead to overeating as a way to bury emotional issues</p>
<p>• Hereditary and social factors: Hereditary factors such as genes and biochemical individuality can play significant roles in a person&#8217;s tendency to become obese, for instance, children who are obese and overweight often have parents and grandparents who were as well. But hereditary predisposition for unhealthy weight gain can also be influenced by social factors, such as:</p>
<p>o Eating overly large meals without a comparable amount of exercise to burn calories</p>
<p>o Habitually eating fast, processed foods high in unhealthy fats and low in nutritional value</p>
<p>• Insulin imbalance: Many people suffer from obesity because of imbalances of the hormone insulin. Insulin is essential for help the body make use of glucose, the body&#8217;s primary fuel, as well as carbohydrates. In a state of health, insulin levels rise after each meal so that insulin can transport glucose from the bloodstream to the cells. Once this is accomplished, insulin is cleared from the bloodstream until it is needed after the next meal. If the body is unable to clear insulin, due to insulin imbalances, a condition known as glucose intolerance can occur. This, in turn, can make a person feel hungry even after he or she has just eaten, adding to his or her unhealthy weight gain. Over time, as more weight is gained, this vicious cycle becomes worse and worse, eventually to the point where the body becomes unable to respond to insulin as it attempts to do its job. As a result, the body, to little or no avail, leaving the cells deprived of the glucose they need to create proper energy levels, often produces greater and greater amounts of insulin.</p>
<p>This explains why people who are overweight or obese are also usually chronically tired. Compounding the problem, since the insulin is unable to convert glucose to energy, the glucose ends up being stored into the body&#8217;s fat cells, creating a higher percentage of body fat. Left unchecked, this can lead to adult-onset (type II diabetes). When insulin imbalances occur, the body&#8217;s ability to metabolize glucose and carbohydrates becomes impaired. Insulin imbalances can also lead to increased salt and water retention, sleep disorders caused by insulin interference with the brain&#8217;s neurotransmitters, increased production of LDL (&#8220;bad&#8221;) cholesterol, impaired thyroid function and a resultant sluggish metabolism, high blood sugar, and further food cravings, especially for simple carbohydrates, which can cause insulin imbalances in the first place.</p>
<p>• Lifestyle factors: A sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise are the two biggest lifestyle factors that contribute to unhealthy weight gain.</p>
<p>• Metabolic disorders (the rate at which the body uses energy) such as impaired thyroid function, psychological factors, and toxins, impaired thermogenesis. Thermogenesis refers to the process by which the body produces energy in the form of heat above a person&#8217;s resting metabolic rate. It is one of the mechanisms the body uses to turn calories into energy. When thermogenesis becomes impaired, instead of being burned up, calories start to accumulate in the body as fat, even during times of dieting and exercise. One of the main causes of impaired thermogenesis is chronic dieting, which, over time, can cause a lower rate of thermogenesis and a corresponding increase in feelings of hunger.</p>
<p>Other Obesity Risks Factors May Also Include:</p>
<p>• Chemical Processing in Foods (such as: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and the artificial sweeteners aspartame (aspartic acid)</p>
<p>• Psychological Factors: Overeating due to a tendency to eat in response to unresolved emotional issues, such as anger, anxiety, boredom, and grief, or to fill an emotional void due to feelings of not being loved or appreciated.</p>
<p>• Toxins and Toxic Burden: Toxins, both from foods in the form of chemical additives, and from environmental pollutants in our air, water, and soil supplies, are a primary cause of obesity and weight gain, as well as most chronic, degenerative disease condition.</p>
<p>If you are overweight or obese, see a medical doctor and/or an alternative health practitioner to arrange a thorough examination to determine if there are any undiagnosed medical causes for your condition, such as food allergies, insulin imbalances or low thyroid function and other metabolic disturbances. <p><strong>Obesity and Eating Disorders: Two Sides of the Same Coin</strong></p>
<p>It  is common knowledge that there is a mounting childhood obesity problem  in the United States. Childhood obesity is a serious matter that has  received nationwide attention and is being addressed in hopes that we  can turn the epidemic around. Over the last three decades, according to  the Center for Disease Control (CDC), <a href="http://thetridentgroup.org/"><strong>obesity</strong></a> has more than tripled from  6.5% to 19.6% in children age 6-11; and from 5.0% to 18% in adolescents  age 12-19. While the childhood obesity problem is usually attributed to  a caloric imbalance &#8211; too many calories in and not enough calories  expended, there is reason to believe that there may be other underlying  reasons for the problem.</p>
<p>Although childhood obesity is a major  concern, on the other side of the spectrum however, we have many  adolescents who are suffering from eating disorders, such as anorexia or  bulimia, and are starving themselves thin. It is estimated that 8  million Americans have an eating disorder; 95% of those are between the  ages of 12 and 25; 50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see  themselves as overweight. Teenage girls especially, further influenced  by the media and depictions of unrealistic body images, are often the  victims of anorexia and bulimia.</p>
<p>Often seen as separate problems,  experts believe obesity and eating disorders often coincide as a child  trades one problem for the other. The child struggling with obesity is  often already suffering from a different eating disorder &#8211; binge eating &#8211;  as a coping method for anger, stress, depression, anxiety or other  underlying issue. By only focusing on treating the obesity, and not  addressing the underlying cause, the child may then fall prey to a  different eating disorder. It is during this delicate period of  adolescence that most cases of anorexia or bulimia transpire; a time  when adolescents are struggling with many issues that are out of their  control, they turn to food, diets, exercise, weight management, in an  effort to find some control in their lives.</p>
<p><strong>Fight Eating Disorders and Obesity With Healthy Habits</strong></p>
<p>The  best defense against eating disorders is to advocate healthy attitudes  and behaviors toward eating and body image. Parent and adult caregivers  should strive to be positive role models to children who often look up  to them as they form their own attitudes about body image and eating.  Adults need to be mindful of children&#8217;s emotional health as many times  it is linked to the obesity or eating disorder problem. Discuss with  children the negative media messages and distorted body images portrayed  on television or in magazines. Focus on encouraging the child&#8217;s talents  or abilities; stress the importance of their health and not their  appearance.</p>
<p>Foster a positive and healthy relationship with food.  Help children to recognize the difference between emotional eating and  physiological hunger. Encourage children to stop eating when full and  never force children to be required to finish everything on their plate.  Try not to use food as a reward for accomplishing a goal or task. As  often as possible, try to eat together as a family and use this time to  bond and talk with your children, to get a sense of their relationship  with food, to hone in on their moods and to get a feel for how they are  doing.</p>
<p>Our children are our future. Obesity and eating disorders  need to be addressed hand-in-hand. If we take action now and help foster  positive attitudes in our children today, we can help ensure they take  these healthy habits with them into adulthood. By dealing with the  underlying reasons our youth are suffering from eating disorders,  whether binge eating, which leads to obesity, or anorexia or bulimia  that leads to starvation, we can hopefully find a solution to finally  combat two birds with one stone, and guarantee our children the future  they deserve.</p>

<p>There are many fasting benefits and in my experience, very few drawbacks. Fasting for me means going 24 to 36 hours, usually 36, without eating any solid food. Drinking water and lots of it is a must. It helps with detoxification and makes you feel a little fuller. It&#8217;s also acceptable to drink juice during a fast, no more than a couple ounces every 2 hours. I recommend organic apple juice. Some people claim that drinking juice can help your system to process and eliminate toxins while fasting. I tend to stick to nothing but water. If nothing else, you feel like you really stuck to your fasting at the end.</p>
<p>Except for one month off, I&#8217;ve been fasting every week for almost a year. I initially did it to detox and lose weight. I think I accomplished both of those things and I now use it to maintain my weight. In combination with diet and exercise, fasting helped me to lose 30 pounds over the past year. Below are some of the fasting benefits that I&#8217;ve personally experienced over the past year.</p>
<p>Deeper, better quality sleep &#8211; You should always end your fast on a morning, that way you spend most of the last hours of it sleeping rather than thinking about how hungry you are. You should also be sure to set your alarm clock because you sleep so deep at the end of a fast that it&#8217;s hard to get up. You get that very comfortable sleep like in the winter when it&#8217;s warm under the covers and cold outside.</p>
<p>Feel better &#8211; I often work out before eating on the last day of a fast because you feel energized. Actually the whole second half of any fast you tend to feel detoxed and like your system is operating efficiently. I won&#8217;t kid you, at times you can feel very hungry and generally rough during a fast but once you&#8217;ve done it a few times you&#8217;ll ignore that.</p>
<p>Detox &#8211; One of the main fasting benefits is detox. Your body collects toxins just from your normal daily activities so it&#8217;s important to detox once in a while. This requires giving your liver a break so it can stop processing food and focus on cleaning out your blood. You can actually feel this, your system feels cleaner after you&#8217;ve digested your last morsel of food.</p>
<p>Control over your eating &#8211; This is one that most people don&#8217;t discuss but I&#8217;ve found that fasting is helpful in convincing you that you are in control of your eating. Most people think it&#8217;s a biological imperative that they eat at least 3 times a day. It&#8217;s not. Your body can go much longer without food and it&#8217;s a good exercise to go without the food so that you can understand how hunger is just a signal. It&#8217;s important information, but it&#8217;s completely within your control to ignore it for quite some time.</p>
<p>Weight loss &#8211; This is probably the biggest reason I started fasting but it&#8217;s not really what I consider the biggest benefit. Don&#8217;t get me wrong, you can quickly drop 5 to 10 pounds by fasting. But it&#8217;s not a great strategy for long term weight loss unless you plan to fast every week like I do. Even then, you should modify the rest of your diet and exercise routine to make sure you&#8217;re retaining your muscle mass because your body will cannibalize your muscles for food when you fast. I suggest fasting a few times and seeing how you like it. Then later, once you know how it affects you, you can use it to drop a few pounds before a high school reunion.</p>
<p>There are others, but these are the main benefits of fasting that I have personally experienced. While I think everyone should try it at least once, I understand that it won&#8217;t be for everyone. As always, make sure that you consult your doctor before starting any major changes to your diet and exercise program.</p>

<p>As promised, here are three simple steps that WILL help you to get that body to die for:</p>
<p>Step 1: Remove all bad foods from your proximity.</p>
<p>Take the bad stuff out of your house, office and locker &#8211; whatever place you have food stashes in &#8211; of all evil food. This is CRUCIAL. If you have &#8220;it&#8221; (chips, candy bars, cornflakes) within reach, sooner or later, you will succumb to it. It&#8217;s happened to me countless times and I&#8217;ve learnt to keep my house junk-free. Having such foods around is just setting yourself up for failure. Once, I found two Snickers bars (they belonged to a relative who had stayed over for a couple of weeks) in the basket on top of the fridge. I ate them, one after the other. So, get rid of it. Don&#8217;t give it away &#8211; it is not even right to offer health destroying food to your family and friends. Dump it. Today. And DON&#8217;T BUY MORE!</p>

<p>Inform supportive friends and family of your new dietary resolutions. Call them when you&#8217;re struggling with food cravings to the breaking point and have them remind you of your goals. Play a quick game of bridge with your cousin till the longing for crème-filled choux puffs passes and you&#8217;re your real self again.</p>
<p>Close friends and members of your family can be very good encouragers and this is even more so during family feasts! Once, when I was on a strict cutting diet, I had a friend who went out of her way to prepare a special low-calorie, high protein soup just for me, during a potluck. That kind of support can be incredibly encouraging when you&#8217;re struggling with adjusting to your diet.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Just because you regularly clock in at the gym doesn’t mean you are on the road to fast fat loss results. Marathon type workouts and going at it half-heartedly isn’t the way to train to look your best in the shortest amount of time. It is time to stop guessing and livings in hope of miraculously waking up with a perfect body because it doesn’t work like that. What follows are brief excerpts of some of my favourite training tips guaranteed to carve you a better body with less body fat in less than a fraction of the time you currently spend.</p>
<p>Before embarking on regular exercise it is important to assess which muscles are tight and need stretching. The reason for this is because a tight muscle could compromise the technique of an exercise and over compensates other parts of the body causing overuse problems. Learning proper stretching techniques and investing time in holding the stretches in the areas you can feel stretch when you perform them will benefit your posture and help prevent injuries.</p>
<p>When you exercise you need to train intense but smart. This means training within your capabilities that allows a minimum of a good technique on everything you do. This mainly points to lifting a weight that is too heavy for you. Doing only part of the range of a movement or trying to force more reps than you can manage safely will probably result in quick and poorly performed repetitions. Properly performed reps are real reps; they are more demanding and achieve greater results. Poorly performed reps will take the stress away from the body part making it easier but less effective.</p>
<p>Exercise selection is important if you want fat loss too. Big movements are essential. The multi joint exercises works more muscles and burns more calories, whether if you want to body build, tone or reduce fat the big exercises will get you there quicker. Performed correctly they will also have the best carry over effect to functional ability to help you in work, sports and day to day tasks.</p>
<p>Think of exercises a bit like your diet, the more variety the better. I once learnt in a lecture that an average person eats no more than 12 different kinds of food in a typical week. Do you do the same with exercise selection by doing the same exercises week in and week out? If so, then it is time to shock your system. Train to achieve a response from your workout with the method of rotating your exercises frequently. Keep in mind there are many alternatives to the standard exercises; although you are basically doing the same movement you can change the response by using different tools and methods. You also have less chance of suffering from ‘overuse injuries’ if you regularly rotate your exercises.</p>
<p>To get the best results you will need to move quick between exercises without rushing the reps. The next time you are in the gym take a look around; chances are there are people lifting more weight than they are capable of lifting which will mean poorly performed fast sets of exercises. Now take a note of how long people rest in-between sets, I can bet you that the average time is a few minutes before doing the next set. It surprises me how many people on weight loss and toning programmes do this, they are resting far too long. They are taking the same amount of rest needed to achieve a 3-5-rep max. Decrease the rest time between sets for more intensity in the workout, it is normally the first variable I introduce in a programme to increase the overall intensity.</p>
<p>If you can’t make it to the gym don’t worry because you can achieve fat loss without any gym equipment. Have you noticed the physiques of gymnasts? You will never see overweight or out of shape gymnast, that’s because training against gravity is one of the best things you can do to look your best. The feedback I get from clients after doing bodyweight exercises is always that they are surprised how hard they are and how much effort is needed to perform them. Make sure to include gravity-based body weight exercises in your fat loss workout.</p>

Many people find that they not only regain the weight they had lost, but also manage to add a few pounds to the scale.</p>
